The following is information about the Reporting for the Public Good course (COM 310) I teach at Elon University.

Catalog Description

Students become reporters and writers who emphasize accuracy, logic, and the sound and sense of words. Students analyze good journalism and discuss concepts such as civic journalism, the watchdog function of the news media, ethical practice, and journalism’s role in serving the public good in a democracy. Prerequisite: C- or better in COM 110.

Course Goal

Create awareness and knowledge of contemporary issues and news content, and refine skills in judging, gathering and reporting for news media.

Course Objectives

Throughout this course, students will be able to:

  • Apply skills in information gathering, interviewing, reporting and news writing.
  • Further develop awareness of ethical ways of reasoning and professional writing standards in matters such as truth, accuracy, fairness, objectivity, diversity and meeting deadlines.
  • Write clearly and effectively, and with a sense of serving the public good.
  • Demonstrate awareness of issues of new technology, convergence, ownership, global development, ethics, law and regulation.
  • Produce media content through data collection, applying numerical concepts, and critical evaluation.
